From Dated Bedroom to Dream Primary Suite: A Medford, MA Renovation Story

At FiveTen Construction & Design, we love transforming underutilized spaces into thoughtfully designed homes that reflect how our clients actually live. This recent primary suite renovation in Medford, MA is a perfect example of how intentional construction design and general contracting expertise can completely reimagine a home.

What It Was

When we first walked the space the existing bedroom and walk-in closet offered potential—but it was stuck in the past:

  • A large bedroom with old carpet and dated fixtures

  • A former porch converted into a walk-in closet, complete with a pitched ceiling and sloped floor

  • Limited storage and a layout that didn’t match the homeowners’ lifestyle

While the footprint was generous, the functionality and flow was not.

The Wish List

Our clients came to us with a clear vision for what they wanted their Medford home to become:

  • A luxury soaking tub

  • A large shower with a built-in bench

  • A new bedroom closet — a dedicated “his closet”

  • Smart bathroom storage solutions

  • A thoughtful balance of natural light and privacy

The Plan: Construction Design Meets Craftsmanship

As a design-focused general contractor in Medford, MA, we guided this project from planning through completion.

Structural & Layout Improvements

  • Sistered floor joists to level the previously pitched floor, creating a solid foundation for the new bathroom complete with new subflooring

  • Closed up an oversized window and installed matching exterior siding for a seamless exterior look

  • Added a new small tempered glass window to maintain natural light while improving privacy and ventilation

Lighting & Mechanical Upgrades

  • Installed a new vented exhaust fan with integrated lighting

  • Roughed and installed new recessed lighting throughout the bathroom

  • Added recessed lighting and a modern “fandelier” in the bedroom, all on dimmers for layered lighting control

Bathroom Design Highlights

  • A luxury soaking tub paired with a floor-mounted tub filler for a true spa-like feel

  • Wall tile behind the tub to protect from splashes and add visual impact

  • A custom integrated wall shelf behind the tub, fabricated from the same quartz as the vanity top for a cohesive, high-end look

  • A wood-toned 42” vanity topped with quartz for warmth and durability

  • A large walk-in shower featuring:

    • Large-format wall tile

    • A built-in niche

    • A corner bench—perfect for shaving and everyday convenience

  • A frameless glass shower door to elevate the overall design and keep the space feeling open

Bedroom & Storage Enhancements

  • Created a brand-new “his closet”, complementing the existing “hers closet”

  • Removed carpet to discover and restore original hardwood floors, bringing them back to life

  • Finished the bedroom with a cozy blue paint color that adds warmth without overpowering the space

What We Created

The end result is a complete transformation:

  • A brand new primary suite designed for comfort, function, and longevity

  • A modernized bedroom featuring revived hardwood flooring, fresh paint, and layered lighting

  • A dream bathroom that blends style and practicality—one that feels just as good to use as it looks

This project showcases what’s possible when thoughtful construction design meets experienced general contracting in Medford, MA.
